ANNOUNCER: Now entering Brains On headquarters.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Hey there, Smarty Pal. I'm your host, Mr Bonejangles, Brains On headquarters' resident tap-dancing, bat-befriending skeleton. It's currently 11:02 PM and Brains On host, Molly Bloom is fast asleep, meaning now there's a real honest to goodness host with the most behind this microphone, a.k.a. "moi."
In case that was unclear, I just wanted to make sure that was clear. I'm looking forward to sharing my many opinions, theories, theses, convictions, and most crucially, songs with you. Plus, we'll be taking your calls live to "pa-tell-ya" answers to your most pressing queries.
[LAUGHS]
Did you get the "pa-tell-ya" joke? Patella is a bone. You know the kneecap? You know what I mean.
We all have-- we all have-- to it's a thing to anywho. Our first segment today is one that many fans have been clamoring for.
[DOOR CLACKS]
MOLLY BLOOM: Mr. Bonejangles? What are you doing in the studio?
MR. BONEJANGLES: Me? In the studio?
MOLLY BLOOM: Yes. You're sitting behind the microphone in the Brains On studio.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Oh, that.
[LAUGHS]
I was just in there making sure this chair doesn't squeak. I wouldn't want any chair squeaks being picked up on this gorgeous microphone.
[LAUGHS]
You know my motto-- my bones may creak, but the chair shouldn't squeak. It's one of many.
MOLLY BLOOM: OK. Anyway, as long as you're here, can I test out some new mystery sounds on you?
MR. BONEJANGLES: Oh, Molly, my esteemed friend, I would be honored, and delighted, and a little scared.
MOLLY BLOOM: Excellent. I have three jars here that I was just bringing to the mystery sound storage room. Here we go. Here's the first sound.
[RAPID FOOTSTEPS]
MR. BONEJANGLES: Horse skeleton.
MOLLY BLOOM: Oh, a horse skeleton. That's a really interesting guess. Do you want to hear it again?
MR. BONEJANGLES: Does interesting mean good?
MOLLY BLOOM: It's up to you what it means. Do you want to hear it again?
MR. BONEJANGLES: It does mean good.
MOLLY BLOOM: Yes.
MR. BONEJANGLES: OK, sure.
[RAPID FOOTSTEPS]
MOLLY BLOOM: OK, Mr. Bonejangles, what do you think? Last time you thought horse skeleton.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Oh, my goodness, I can't believe I said that. That's so embarrassing. Well, having heard it a second time, of course it's donkey skeleton.
[CHUCKLES]
MOLLY BLOOM: You are not that close, but do you want to hear the answer? Here, let me give you-- let me give you a hint. Let me give you a little hint. This is an activity that you enjoy doing.
MR. BONEJANGLES: An activity that I enjoy doing that's appropriate for children. Let's see.
MOLLY BLOOM: [CACKLES]
MR. BONEJANGLES: An activity I enjoy doing. Snapping my spine back into place?
MOLLY BLOOM: Oh, that is fun. The answer is tap dancing.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Oh, my goodness! Oh, gosh, I got to give up my shoes. I can't believe I didn't know that. Oh, my teacher's going to be so mad.
MOLLY BLOOM: No, they're going to understand for sure. Here let's try another one. You ready?
MR. BONEJANGLES: OK. Yes, I'm ready this time. I know I am good. I'm good at this. I can do this.
MOLLY BLOOM: All right, here's the next mystery sound.
[HIGH-PITCHED WHISTLING]
That was a little unpleasant. What do you think?
MR. BONEJANGLES: Yes, I can't hear you anymore. Oh, there you go. OK, now you're coming in. You're coming in OK. Is that the sound of my cat after I step on its tail?
MOLLY BLOOM: Ooh, very good guess. I know those cats are always underfoot. They just want to hang out.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Yes.
MOLLY BLOOM: Get some scritches. All right, I'm not going to play it again. But just go back in your mind to remember what that sound was because it was a little unpleasant. It's an important sound, though.
I'll give you a hint. It's something that you might do on a rainy day, get cozy.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Oh, watch a spooky movie and scream my head off. Was that me? Did you record me?
MOLLY BLOOM: [CHUCKLES]
No, but it does sound a lot like you when you get scared. The answer is a tea kettle.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Oh, my gosh. Oh, no wonder I've switched to coffee about two years ago. Oh, my goodness.
OK, all right. That makes sense. That makes sense.
MOLLY BLOOM: Mm-hm. All right. We have one more mystery sound to try out. Here it is.
[CHITTERING]
MR. BONEJANGLES: All right. Let me think about this one. Let me think. Let me think.
Well, as I've always been told, the most obvious answer is never the right one. So I'm going to say that it's not-- can't be a shower. It is wind. It's a wind storm, thunderstorm. Ah, I've been electrocuted, right?
MOLLY BLOOM: Not quite. I'll give you a little hint. Give you a little hint.
MR. BONEJANGLES: OK.
MOLLY BLOOM: These are some of your best friends.
MR. BONEJANGLES: All right. OK, it's not a sauna. It's not a sauna.
So it is absolutely-- has to be 100% the tea kettle again. It's a tea kettle. It's tea.
MOLLY BLOOM: Tea? Yes, I mean, I know you are good friends with the tea kettle, but these are your other good friends. The answer is bats hanging out in a cave.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Oh, my gosh! Oh, of course. Oh, my lord.
Oh, my goodness. I think I'm going home to some angry friends. I'm going home to some angry, angry friends. They're not going to want to hang out with me anymore.
MOLLY BLOOM: No, they're going to understand. They're your good friends. They love you no matter what.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Thank you. Oh, my gosh. This saves me on therapy for the week. Thank you.
MOLLY BLOOM: [CHUCKLES]
Well, thank you so much for helping me test these sounds, Mr. Bonejangles. Do you want to head to the lab or kitchen for a near midnight snack?
MR. BONEJANGLES: Well, I suppose I could finish my show art task of fixing this chair later.
[LAUGHS]
Oh, gosh.
MOLLY BLOOM: That's it for this Smartie Pass episode. It was written by Anna Weggel and produced by Aron Waldeslassie. Our executive producer is Beth Perlman and the APM Studios executives in charge are Chandra Kavati and Joanne Griffith. Brains On is a nonprofit program. Bye, Smartie Pals.
MR. BONEJANGLES: Bye. Bye.
