Audio Transcript
ROBOT: Now entering Brains On headquarters.
JOY DOLO: Oh, my gosh. Smarty pal, you're just in time for today's Forever Ago face off, off, off. Today, we're combining my two favorite things-- historical facts and cutthroat competition. I have temporarily moved the roaming recording rover and my 2004 Honda Civic and transformed the Brains On garage into a boxing arena. Check it out. We've got the bouncy ropes, the extremely official timekeeping bell--
[BELL RINGING]
And the squishy mats that reek of the unwashed feet of countless champions.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
We have a tremendous match-up for you folks today. Our two fierce fact freaks are entering the arena. In this corner at an imposing 5 feet and 3 inches, it's our spreadsheet superstar, Forever Ago, producer Nico Gonzalez Wisler!
NICO GONZALEZ WISLER: Here to destroy!
JOY DOLO: Oh, yeah! Destroy all. And in this other corner, at a slightly shorter, but still formidable 5 feet, 1 inch. It's the Brains On and Smash Boom Best hostess with the mostest, Molly Bloom!
MOLLY BLOOM: I'm tiny and tough. Just like a tardigrade.
JOY DOLO: Yeah, we all know what that is.
[LAUGHTER]
MOLLY BLOOM: It's also known as a water bear.
NICO GONZALEZ WISLER: Thank you for us.
[LAUGHTER]
[BELL RINGING]
JOY DOLO: All right, you two. Here's how it's going to go. This is going to be a best of three game of rock, paper, scissors. That means there will be three rounds and you need to win two to take home this very shiny and extremely sticky trophy.
MOLLY BLOOM: Joy, did you make another chewing gum sculpture and spray paint it gold?
JOY DOLO: Does my cat look so cute in his tiny denim jacket? Of course! Now back to the rules. After each round, the winner of that round will get to show what they know by sharing one fact about the history of rock, paper, scissors. You got it?
BOTH: Got it.
JOY DOLO: All right. Silence in the arena. On your marks. Get set. Duel!
BOTH: Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot!
JOY DOLO: Oh!
MOLLY BLOOM: Tie.
NICO GONZALEZ WISLER: We have a tie. Two scissors!
BOTH: Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot!
JOY DOLO: Oh, we have another tie. It's like they are of one mind. Two rocks. Again, again!
BOTH: Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot!
[LAUGHTER]
JOY DOLO: It's as if they are twins lost at birth. Again, again!
BOTH: Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot!
JOY DOLO: I can't handle this. I don't think this is going to work. We should have got somebody else. We should have got Rosie Dupont here.
[LAUGHTER]
JOY DOLO: OK.
MOLLY BLOOM: Joy and I.
JOY DOLO: Or the same way. Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot!
NICO GONZALEZ WISLER: There we go. There we go.
JOY DOLO: And Molly takes round one. Let's hear that fact.
MOLLY BLOOM: OK, so the first version of rock, paper, scissors is believed to have been played over 2,000 years ago in ancient China. But it wasn't called rock, paper, scissors back then. And the rules were different. But the game had the basics of using your hands in a competition with another person.
JOY DOLO: Wow, well, it sounds like you two are of the same person because you both did the same moves. But I think that's OK. I think it's time for our next round. I'm ready when you two are.
BOTH: Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot!
NICO GONZALEZ WISLER: Oh, yeah.
MOLLY BLOOM: Gosh.
JOY DOLO: Scissors cut paper. Nico is the winner. Drop us some knowledge.
NICO GONZALEZ WISLER: OK. From China, the game was brought to Japan. In Japanese history, there's a lot talk about something called sansukumi-ken. This roughly translates to fist games with the three who are afraid of one another. The earliest sansukumi-ken in Japan was called mushi-ken. In mushi-ken, the frog, which is represented by the thumb triumphs over the slug represented by the little finger which in turn prevails over the snake represented by the index finger which triumphs over the frog. Whoa.
JOY DOLO: All right. Last round moment of truth. This is for the golden gum trophy, the grophy, if you will.
NICO GONZALEZ WISLER: All right.
BOTH: Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot!
MOLLY BLOOM: Scissors beats paper.
JOY DOLO: Scissors beat-- Molly is our champion. Let's hear that last fact.
MOLLY BLOOM: Today, the best known fist game from Japan is called janken. It uses the rock, paper and scissors signs we know and love. It dates back to the late 1800s, but it spread through the world in the 1900s. Because it's fun, simple, and you don't need any extra equipment to play.
JOY DOLO: Excellent work, my towering titans of history. And thanks to our Smarty pals for being such a great crowd. Now, let's clear out of here before my civic gets a ticket.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
That's it for this Smarty Pass episode. It was made by Aron Weldeslassie. Our executive producer is Beth Perlman. And the APM Studios Executives in charge are Chandra Kavati and Joanne Griffith. Brains On is a non-profit radio program. Thanks, Smarty Pass, friends. See you next time!
MOLLY BLOOM: Bye, bye!
NICO GONZALEZ WISLER: Bye.
JOY DOLO: Goodbye.
