Producers Anna Goldfield and Marc Sanchez are in the Brains On Zoo and oh no! The animals are loose! Anna and Marc will have to use their animal calls to bring them all back. But first, they'll play a game of Impression Sounds to see if their animal calls are good enough. Impression Sounds is like Mystery Sounds, but instead of listening to a recording of a sound, they’ll have to make animal sounds with their mouths. The other person will then guess what animal they are trying to imitate! Get ready for a barnyard bonanza.

ANNOUNCER: Now entering Brains On headquarters.
[ELECTRONIC SOUNDS]
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Hey, Smarty pal. Brains On producer, Anna Goldfield here, with the one and only, Marc Sanchez.
MARC SANCHEZ: That's right. We've been hanging out at the Brains On zoo to watch the animals. But now, we got to head to the movies. We're going to go watch Freaky Deaky Beaky. It's the story of a group of zombie birds who switch bodies with teenage girls.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Uh, I can't wait to get scared.
MARC SANCHEZ: [CHUCKLES] I know. I hope they have the--
[MOO]
Was that a cow?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: It was a cow. Look.
[MOO]
MARC SANCHEZ: Oh, it's Sanden's cow, Sirloin.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Sirloin?
MARC SANCHEZ: That's what I said.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: What's his cow doing here and not on the farm?
MARC SANCHEZ: Uh-huh, must have snuck off. Here, let's walk her back.
[QUACKS]
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Hey, it's Molly's duck, Vivian.
MARC SANCHEZ: How did all these animals get out?
[QUACKS]
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Oh, she says, someone left a farm gate open, and all the animals are wandering HQ, looking for snacks.
MARC SANCHEZ: I guess that explains most of how they got out. But it doesn't explain that you speak duck?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: I took it in high school. It was an elective.
MARC SANCHEZ: Do you speak cow, too?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Don't be ridiculous. But from what Molly's duck is saying, all of the animals at Brains On are loose. We got to catch them.
MARC SANCHEZ: Right. Do any animal calls?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: What they got, like, a phone number?
MARC SANCHEZ: No. Do any sounds that attract specific animals. Like, can you make the sound that'll bring an escaped chicken over?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Oh, yeah, I can cluck.
[CLUCKS]
That's a great chicken call, ah?
[BRAYS]
MARC SANCHEZ: Needs some work.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Well, you know, what we should do? We should play a quick game of impression sounds, to work on our animal calls.
MARC SANCHEZ: OK. What's impression sounds?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Oh, it's like the classic Brains On game mystery sound. But, this time, the sounds come from us. We'll each make animal calls, and the other has to guess what animal we're imitating.
[QUACKS]
Oh, Vivian's right. And the person who guesses the most animal calls correctly, will be the winner?
MARC SANCHEZ: Oh, I love winners. All right. I'll go first.
[SLURPING]
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Oh, was that the sound of a turtle's head going back into its shell?
MARC SANCHEZ: No, but I think that's a good guess because I guess, there's, probably, some sort of liquid related to it. I'm not sure. I'm not a scientist. [CHUCKLES]
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Ah, is it a fish with an accent?
MARC SANCHEZ: [CHUCKLES] French fried fish? No.
[SLURPING]
ANNA GOLDFIELD: I am stumped. I'm stumped.
MARC SANCHEZ: That's the sound of a gecko walking up a wall, of course.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Ah.
MARC SANCHEZ: Which-- which--
ANNA GOLDFIELD: It's little sticky feet.
MARC SANCHEZ: Which, by these rules, is a classic gecko call. [CHUCKLES]
ANNA GOLDFIELD: True.
MARC SANCHEZ: Geckos love to come back to the sound of other geckos running up a wall.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: I have a gecko call. It goes like this, come here gecko.
MARC SANCHEZ: That's good. That's good.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Probably.
MARC SANCHEZ: I'll try that.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: OK, my turn. My turn.
MARC SANCHEZ: All right.
[HOOTING]
ANNA GOLDFIELD: That was it?
MARC SANCHEZ: Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK I'm going to say bird.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Mm-hmm.
MARC SANCHEZ: OK.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Mm-hmm.
MARC SANCHEZ: Does this bird fly?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: It can.
MARC SANCHEZ: But it's not known to fly?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: No. It can get up into low branches of trees, but you won't see it soaring overhead.
MARC SANCHEZ: Is it an ostrich?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: [CHUCKLES] That would be awesome. I actually don't know what sound an ostrich makes.
MARC SANCHEZ: Well, everybody knows what an ostrich sound sounds like. And it's clearly that. I know this sound. I feel like I've heard this bird before.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: You were, sort of, in the right ballpark with ostrich, in the sense that it's kind of a fancy bird.
MARC SANCHEZ: A Peacock.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Yeah.
MARC SANCHEZ: OK, yeah, yeah. There's a group of wild peacocks that roam, sort of, near my neighborhood. Not really, quite-- not quite in my neighborhood. But I've seen them.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: A gang of peacocks.
MARC SANCHEZ: Yeah. And they're pretty, they're fun to watch. But they're super loud and annoying.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: They are very loud and annoying.
MARC SANCHEZ: Yeah. Imagine 12 of that beautiful Peacock call that you just did, at all hours, right. All right. Round three. You ready?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Mm-hmm.
MARC SANCHEZ: OK, here we go. [SQUAWKS] Polly want a cracker. Pretty bird. Pretty bird.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Oh, that's a pirate parrot.
MARC SANCHEZ: Exactly. Exactly. It's not just any parrot. It's a parrot that sits on a shoulder.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Mm-hmm.
MARC SANCHEZ: All right, you're up.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: All right.
[NEIGHS]
MARC SANCHEZ: That would be the famous cousin of Mr. Ed, the horse, which is Mr. Horse, the regular horse. Is that a horse?
ANNA GOLDFIELD: I was going for horse.
MARC SANCHEZ: Ha, ha. Well, opposite of neigh, because that's a yay. I got that one. And, hey, all the animals are heading back to the farm on their own, even that gecko. Someone must have told them that the vending machine here is broken.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: [SCOFFS] Looks like the winner is snacks. But, Mark, you guessed mine correctly. And you stumped me, so.
MARC SANCHEZ: Complete stumper.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: High five to you, buddy.
[GROWL]
Wait. Was that a-- was that a tiger?
MARC SANCHEZ: Well, you did say that you wanted to get scared.
ANNA GOLDFIELD: Ooh.
MARC SANCHEZ: That's it for this Smarty Pass episode. It was made by Aron Woldeslassie, and Anna Goldfield. Our executive producer is Beth Pearlman And the APM Studios executives in charge are Chandra Kavati, Alex Schaffert, and Joanne Griffith. Brains On is a non-profit radio program. Thanks, Smarty Pass friends. Bye.
